Picking up from the cliffhanger last week, episode 5 of The Promised Neverland finds Ray and Norman discussing who is the traitor. Due to Norman’s trap, it is revealed that Ray is indeed the turncoat. However, he reveals that he’s been playing both sides for a long time, tricking Mom and planning an escape. Ray promises to help Emma and Norman, but only if Norman promises to leave everyone else behind except Emma and Gilda and Don.
Norman has a dream wherein everyone tries to escape and they all die because of it. The group discovers that Mom has a secret room. Don and Gilda, against the advice of Ray, decide to search for the hidden space. While the two are investigating Mom’s room the door slowly opens and, before we see who is on the other side, we are left once again with another cliffhanger.
I’m beginning to lose my patience with The Promised Neverland. The conversation between Ray and Norman dragged on for approximately 9 minutes. We then get another conversation between Ray and Norman and Emma that reiterates everything the first half of the episode spent telling us. It’s frustrating to watch an anime with such promise squander its potential with several uninteresting episodes in a row. Here’s to hoping that something actually happens next week.
Score: 2/5 (I didn’t like it)
